October 31, 2017: This year the Ralph Bunche School will celebrate the importance of reading and literacy. On Tuesday, October 31, staff and scholars will dress up in their favorite character from a book and head to different classrooms to read to fellow students. We are calling this occasion Book-O-Ween! Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Anansi the Spider, Harry Potter, a Greek God and Superman — are some of the characters that will come to life before the scholars’ eyes during Book-O-Ween.
We ask that you adhere to our strict guidelines for costumes that relate to storybook characters. Scholars that dress in costumes that are not related to a storybook will not be permitted to participate in the parade. This is done out of consideration for our very young scholars (some as young as 3) not to be frightened or traumatized by dark/bloody/ghoulish images. Some costumes that might be appropriate for home are not going to be permitted in school as we strive to create a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
The event will start in the morning with teachers sharing their favorite read-a-louds and everyone will take part in a school parade on the large school yard at 1:15pm. With music playing, scholars will walk around the perimeter of the playground showcasing their costumes and saluting their fellow community members. The RBS faculty and Parent Association appreciates everyone who participates in this activity. This is a fun and educational event for the scholars!
